This drink is a variation on the classic martini, made famous by James Bond who famously asks for a “vodka martini, shaken not stirred”.
The vodka Martini is a cocktail that combines vodka, dry vermouth and ice. It is either shaken in a cocktail shaker or mixed in a mixing glass before being poured into the cocktail glass. It can be garnished with a number of things including an olive, a ‘twist’ of lemon peel, capers, or onions, and it can be served either ‘straight’ or ‘on the rocks’ – referring to whether there is ice in the drink or not.
Some Martini connoisseurs will say that the vodka martini is not a true Martini as the original spirit base should be gin, however, this variation on the drink has become very popular. No one quite knows the origin of the Martini, but It certainly gained its fame when it was given a spot in the famous Savoy Cocktail Book by Harry Craddock in the 30s.
This vodka Martini recipe is a great drink for those who love the idea of a Martini but aren’t fond of the very specific taste of gin. It has to be said though that the type of vodka you use is very important. Some cocktails you can get away with any vodka quality because the taste is being hidden by fruity mixers. With the vodka martini however is all about the smooth quality of the vodka. We suggest Grey Goose or Ketel One.
