The Vesper Martini is extremely special for a very simple reason: it may be the only cocktail that has been invented in fiction first. That’s right, acclaimed author Ian Fleming invented the Vesper in his very first novel, Casino Royale, in which the protagonist, James Bond, describes, and orders the very drink.

Who would have thought that Fleming’s James Bond stories would go on to be one of the best-selling book series of all time, selling over 100 million books, and spawn a staggeringly successful movie franchise? As a result, it is easy to see how the martini immediately transcended pop culture and started actually being created and consumed.

Ingredients:

  • 3 ounces of Gordon’s Gin
  • 1 ounce of vodka
  • ½ of Lillet or another dry vermouth
  • 1 lemon peel

Preparation:

  1. In a cocktail shaker, combine the ingredients over ice.
  2. Shake vigorously.
  3. Strain into the chilled cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with the lemon peel.

Equipment:

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Cocktail glass

When the book was written, during the 1950s, Gordon Gin was extremely strong – in fact, it was 94 proof. It is for this reason, possibly, that the character clarifies that he wanted the cocktail “shaken, not stirred”. If shaken, instead of stirred, that allows the ice to dilute the drink much more, so that it isn’t insanely strong. In fact, “shaken, not stirred” became a pop culture phenomenon of its own. It is arguably one of the most used phrased in film history, and is synonymous with the James Bond and 007 franchise. For example, the phrase even has its own Wikipedia. In the book, Bond even clarifies that he prefers to have one large drink before dinner, rather than multiple, and that this particular drink did the job. It actually became known later that Fleming’s friend Ivar Bryce had invented the drink, which had allowed Fleming to add it into his book. Raise a Vesper Martini to James Bond and enjoy!
