This cocktail is perfect for a little something different at your Halloween party. If you like cherry cola you’ll love this recipe with its strong flavours and alcoholic twist. It uses cherry brandy as its main spirit base, however, something like Maraschino the cherry liqueur will be a great substitute.
The black cat superstition is something that varies from country to country some beliving it will bring prosperity to a home or many suitors to a lady who owns one. The two most popular however are born from European and Western history respectively.
In European superstition a black cat is the bringer of bad luck, a symbol of death and misfortune if one is seen. Even further it was believed that if one crossed your path death was imminent. rather it was believed that if one crossed your path death was imminent.
In Western folklore the black cat was known to be a symbolic of evil. This is due to many people’s belief that the black cat was the familiar to a powerful evil witch, or even a witch themselves who was able to transform into a cat to get closer to their victims. Because of this, anyone who was seen to be keeping or caring for a black cat was likely accused of witchcraft and often punished or even killed.
Today thankfully those practices are truly history, although some superstition has remained. This black cat won’t bring misfortune, torture or death… just a hangover if not enjoyed in moderation!
Here’s the black cat cocktail recipe:
- 30ml vodka
- 30ml cherry brandy (or appropriate substitute)
- 120ml cranberry juice (can change per taste)
- 120ml cola (can change per taste)
- Fill a highball glass with ice
- Pour spirits over the ice
- Pour the equal parts cola and cranberry until glass is full
- Stir to mix
- Highball glass
