Vodka has been distilled from potatoes for centuries, but most manufacturers now use wheat, corn, or other grain products. Flavoured Vodka is also nothing new. Russians have been known for hundreds of years to add infusions in preparing their Vodka. Natural herbs and fruits like blackberries, ginger and coriander were all added to the fermented mash prior to distillation.
More modern flavored Vodkas made their appearance in the late 1980’s and took off with consumers over the following decade. At one point, there were dozens of different varieties, offering everything from fluffy marshmallow to whipped cream. Things have calmed down a little since then, but a broad range of fruit flavors continue to be popular and readily available.
You may not have noticed, but flavored Vodkas have a lower alcohol content than the pure version. This makes them an excellent cocktail ingredient because you are often adding several other types of alcohol to your drink as well.
This twist on a traditional Cosmo gives you its trademark tang with the added taste of cherry. Using a flavored Vodka in the drink ensures that it doesn’t become too sweet or overly fruity.
