There are certain drinks that define a country or region, but sometimes, some of the most fun drinks are really about local pride. That’s why the Steelers Cider is interesting. It is born out of the city of Pittsburgh, and named after its football team. Steelers fans are notoriously known for being some of the most enthusiastic and ravenous fans in the United States.
Interestingly enough, the company Maker’s Mark introduced this drink in 2011, during the Superbowl that year, which was being played between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers. Usually, football fans never want anything to do with a game where they ultimately lost – like the Steelers did – but the drink has persisted to be a gameday favorite in the city, and has since spread outside of the city, because it can be made in large batches for tailgating. For those who don’t care about football at all, but simply love a great drink to keep warm in the winter, or cider in general, this works for them, as well.
- 8 ounces of Maker’s Mark whiskey
- 32 ounces of apple cider
- 6 cloves
- 1 thinly-sliced lemon
- ½ teaspoon of allspice
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- Combine the bourbon and cider into a saucepan.
- Add lemon, cloves, allspice, and cinnamon sticks.
- Heat over medium-high heat until the surface almost bubbles.
- Pour into an Irish coffee glass.
- Garnish with a cinnamon stick.
- 1 saucepan
- Irish coffee glass
Interestingly enough, this isnt the only Steelers-themed bank. Herradura Tequila also jumped on the opportunity to create a Steelers-themed tequila punch, also called the Black and Gold punch. Pittsburgh regularly ranks on the lists of the hardest-drinking cities of the United States, and the Steelers franchise is worth 1 billion dollars, so it probably isnt that surprising that alcohol companies are catering to this particular demographic. Regardless, there are many local drinks that are served for a particular sport or team, but few have had the reach of the Steelers Cider. Remember: you dont need to be in Pittsburgh to enjoy one!
