There are cocktails that have been created by bartenders, mixologists, and pirates, on accident and on purpose. However, not many cocktails have been created by oilmen. Well, the Smith and Kearns was. Specifically, the Smith and Kearns was created by Wendell Smith and James Curren, two oilmen, in Bismarck, North Dakota.
They had drank excessively at a bar called the Blue Blazer, and challenged the bartender to come up with a “hair of the dog” concoction. The Smith and Curran was the result – which is the real name of the cocktail. It also goes by other monikers, such as the Smith and Kearns, Smith and Kearn, or Smith and Currens.
- 2 ounces of crème de cacao
- 1 ounce of cream or half-and-half
- ½ ounce of soda
- Fill the tall glass with ice.
- Add the crème de cacao, then the cream.
- Add the soda, then stir.
- Serve the drink with a straw.

There are many people who prefer seltzer water rather than soda, and that works, as well. There are many people who believe in using Kahlua as a variation, but the original certainly is this recipe, and there are people who believe that Kahlua doesnt accurately represent the drink. If using seltzer, it should be noted that excessive stirring might affect the taste of the cocktail. The drink was created in 1952 at the Blue Blazer, and was a product of the oil boom in North Dakota that occurred during the 1950s. It is interesting to note that if there wasnt an oil boom, the world would never have gotten this hair of the dog drink. For those who dont know, a hair of the dog drink refers to a drink that one can use to simultaneously recover from a hangover while still enjoying their alcohol the next day.
