This is a national drink of the island of Bermuda, and to make an authentic Rum Swizzle you should really use Bermuda Rum. Gosling’s is Bermuda’s oldest and best-known Rum manufacturer, and they even market a pre-mixed bottle of Rum Swizzle for those too lazy to mix their own.
You’re going to want to mix this drink yourself, however, not only because it will taste so much better, but because you can use fresh squeezed orange juice which adds great texture to the drink. There are literally hundreds of recipes for fruity Rum drinks, particularly throughout the Caribbean, but in our opinion the Rum Swizzle rivals the Mojito for the best Rum-based cocktail.
The authentic Rum Swizzle recipe calls for Falernum, which is similar to orgeat in that it is a syrup used for sweetening bar drinks. It is unique to the Caribbean, however, and you’re probably going to have a hard time finding it close to home. Don’t despair – grenadine syrup works just as well.
Our recipe for a Rum Swizzle mixes all the ingredients together, but you might want to try making one the way they do at the Gosling’s factory. There, the CEO likes to float the dark rum over the other ingredients once they’re been stirred together. The only real way to compare will be to make your drink both ways. We can guarantee they won’t go to waste.
Here’s the recipe for making a Rum Swizzle:
- 45ml Dark Rum
- 45ml Gold Rum
- 60ml Pineapple juice
- 60ml Orange juice
- 20ml Falernum (or grenadine)
- 2 dashes of aromatic bitters
- Wedge of orange to garnish
- Fill a highball glass with crushed ice.
- Add all ingredients.
- Stir with a cocktail spoon until all ingredients are blended and the glass becomes frosty.
