When it comes to underrepresented fruits in cocktails; plums are certainly up there, especially for how delicious the fruit is. That’s probably why more and more modern cocktails attempt to incorporate them, to provide a new modern edge to their drinks.
This particular concoction was created by John Freeman, and the name quite obviously pays homage to the 2008 Academy Award-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire, centering around an Indian adolescent who manages to win a “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire” game show despite being from the slums.
- 2 ounces of Bulldog Gin
- 1 ounce of Japanese Plum Wine
- 1 ounce of DRY Lavender Soda
- 1 slice of black plum
- 1 tablespoon of lavender sugar
- Rim a cocktail glass with lavender sugar.
- Pour the rest of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker, over ice.
- Shake well.
- Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
- Garnish with a half wheel of sliced black plum (if desired).
- Cocktail shaker
- Cocktail glass
Since the cocktail name directly refers to plums, the garnish is more used than not in this particular case. There are others that insist on just letting the plum slice float on top of the drink, instead. The term âplumdog millionaireâ has even taken on slang for a certain type of alcoholic, essentially someone who asks for some of your drink only to take it all. Because of the name and the play on words on the movie, they actually tend to have money, and are associated with the upper class, but loathed because of their alcoholic tendencies. Regardless, the drink is a new and modern way to enjoy a cocktail that actually celebrates plums. While it may not be everyoneâs cup of tea, it certainly might appeal to those who want to try something different, or those who are plum lovers. Enjoy!
