This cocktail comes to us from the British Virgin Islands. It is the signature drink of the Pusser’s Rum company, and you can’t call your cocktail a Painkiller if it’s not made with Pusser’s.
The company manufactures its liquor in accordance with the process used in former times to make rum for the British Navy - a blending of five West Indian rums. Unfortunately, the navy discontinued its practice of serving a daily tot to the crew in 1970.
You may only be familiar with adding nutmeg to a drink when making an egg nog at Christmas, but it gives a very unique flavour to a variety of cocktails. It’s a staple in the classic Brandy Alexander, for example, and has survived as a key ingredient in all of the variations which have followed. It is also a lovely addition to a hot buttered rum – whether you’re having one for pleasure or medicinal purposes.
Enjoy your Painkiller Cocktail and, as the name suggests, a couple will have you swinging fearlessly from the main mast and feeling very little of anything at all.
