It takes a certain standard of cocktail to truly encapsulate a city, much less New York City, one of the most visited cities in the world. It is also the most populous city in the United States, and is widely considered the most important city in the world when it comes to commerce and business in general.
The beauty of the New York Cocktail is that it is open to interpretation a little bit, while still remaining as classic as the city itself. It appeals to a broad range of drinkers, which is why it’s a great choice for all sorts of potential palates.
- 2 ounces of blended whiskey
- 1 teaspoon of superfine sugar
- ½ teaspoon of grenadine

- 1 lemon twist (optional)
- Pour the ingredients over ice into a cocktail shaker.
- Shake well.
- Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
- Garnish with a lemon twist.
- Cocktail shaker
- Cocktail glass
The lemon twist garnish is optional, of course, but the New York Cocktail really is affected by the type of whiskey that the drinker is interested in. The different whiskies could also mean additional different sweeteners, as well. This allows the drinker to choose exactly what they want, and the New York cocktail is a strong classic serving of whiskey while still allowing for variants. For those who arent sugar fans, the sugar doesnt have to be adopted, as well. The grenadine and lemon juice do not dilute the classic drink, but simply give it a bit of a twist, but overall, the drink is strong, like many classic cocktails from decades ago. Many people choose rye whiskey when it comes to the drink, as well, while others prefer Canadian whiskey. There are still other people who believe the drink is better with some simple syrup. Regardless, you certainly dont have to be in NYC to enjoy a New York Cocktail. Enjoy!
