The Hummingbird is a delicious sweet flavoured alcoholic drink which is popularly served in Jamaica. This sweet cocktail most likely derives its name from the sweetness of the nectar which is so loved by hummingbirds, that it is the only food they consume. This drink definitely categorizes as a relatively more complicated cocktail to mix owing to how many ingredients are used in it.

This cocktail is made using Rum cream liqueur, and the secondary alcohol used in it is coffee liqueur. To this mixture, strawberry and banana flavours are added with the incorporation of milk, resulting in a very creamy cocktail that sports a smoothie consistency. The Hummingbird cocktail is best enjoyed on a sunny afternoon when you have nothing to do but laze around, or party at the beach, or just bask in the warm sunshine.

However, with all drinks of a creamy, milk-shake like consistency it is wise to be aware of two things when having this drink. One is to not underestimate the calories that this drink packs, due to the sheer amount of sugar and milk incorporated into it! So if you’re counting calories, but you do want to try it, it’s best to limit yourself to one. The second thing is not to underestimate the potency of this drink, because while it may not be the strongest cocktail around, the creamy smoothie texture and fruity sweet flavours can easily make you forget that its an alcoholic beverage – and the buzz might sneak up on you before you know.

Without further ado, here is a recipe for this cocktail.

Ingredients:

  • 30 ml Rum Cream Liqueur
  • 30 ml Coffee Flavored Liqueur
  • 30 ml milk
  • 15 ml strawberry flavored syrup
  • 1/2 frozen or fresh banana

Preparation:

  1. Add crushed ice to a blender
  2. In the blender, combine the two liqueurs, the milk and strawberry syrup
  3. Add the banana and then blend until it’s a creamy and smooth consistency
  4. Pour into a cocktail glass and serve

Equipment:

  • Blender
  • Crushed ice
  • Cocktail glass
