5-1 Bottle Opener

Sometimes, the occasion doesn’t call for a fancy cocktail with a sophisticated garnish. Sometimes, you and your friends just want something simple to make, and fun to drink, so that your focus isn’t on creating a drink but on having some good times immediately around you, as fast as possible.

For the fun and simple times, the Gombo is perfect. The cocktail fits in more with a college party than a speakeasy, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t fulfill its obligation: to be a fun, tasty drink that adults can enjoy.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce of Captain Morgan spiced rum
  • 1 ½ ounces of orange juice
  • 3 ounces of Mountain Dew
  • Ice

Preparation:

  1. Build the ingredients over ice in a cocktail glass.
  2. Stir well and serve.

Equipment:

  • Cocktail glass
  • Stirring spoon

The Gombo is great for last-minute drinks, because it is the kind of drink that doesn’t require a cocktail shaker, so you can fix it up simply using a stirring spoon and cocktail glasses. It also is great if you run out of other cocktail ingredients considering all that you need is some rum and soda. As most people know, rum-and-coke is an extremely popular combination all around the world, and Coca-Cola is the soda most associated with rum in general.

Of course, people don’t like to constantly drink the same thing, and the beauty of the simple drink is that despite its three ingredients, the hints of citrus and the spice from a rum make for an addictive combination. Don’t be surprised if you start making Gombos more than you had planned! Of course, for maximum taste, freshly squeezed orange juice should be used. For a fun fact, did you know that Mountain Dew actually has a bit of an “alcoholic” background? The soda was created originally as a mixer for moonshine, and the phrase “mountain dew” was actually at the time (the 1940s), slang for moonshine, which was high-proof liquor that was almost always produced illegally. Regardless, this is a great drink to fix up for a large amount of unexpected guests. Enjoy!
