This is the frozen version of the traditional Blue Hawaii Cocktail recipe; however, it tastes quite different. The Frozen Blue Hawaii Cocktail includes Coconut Rum which makes it more like a blue Pina Colada than a mixed drink.
The Pina Colada is the national drink of Puerto Rico and a standard in beach bars around the globe. Legend has it that a Puerto Rican pirate from the mid 1800s first made the drink to perk up his lackluster band of buccaneers. Officially, it was created by a bartender at the Caribe Hilton in Puerto Rico in 1954.
In 1979, Rupert Holmes immortalized the cocktail with his release of “Escape: the Pina Colada Song”. It was pretty cheesy, but we bet you can hum the chorus right off the top of your head.
The Frozen Blue Hawaii Cocktail recipe uses the same ingredients as a traditional Pina Colada, with the addition of Blue Curacao. Other variations include the Chi Chi, which replaces the White Rum with Vodka, and the Lava Flow, which blends a Pina Colada with a Strawberry Daquiri.
