The Don Pedro comes all the way from South Africa, where it is a traditional drink that is either enjoyed as an enjoyable cocktail or even served after dinner as a dessert. It is a scrumptiously frosty cocktail that introduces a delicious and exciting new ingredient into the world of cocktails – soft vanilla ice cream. There are times when an iced cocktail is just a ticket, and nothing sounds more inviting and comforting than a dollop of ice cream that’s filled with booze, to double the relaxation and the pleasure.
This cocktail is a grown up milkshake in a way, and there are variations to the classic recipe out there, with people adding their favourite liqueurs to the soft vanilla ice cream. However, it is classically made with Kahlua, whose coffee flavour blends beautifully with the vanilla notes of the ice cream to create the perfect sweet dessert. Although this drink sounds like it would be a domineering, dark and powerful drink, it is in fact an indulgent summer cocktail that everyone is guaranteed to love.
The Don Pedro cocktail was created in the 1970’s, making it a retro classic. It is ideally served as a sweet ending to a meal, but there are no rules for this one; it can be enjoyed whenever and wherever you start craving a sweet and icy refreshment that has a bonus kick to it.
