The official cocktail of Bermuda is trademarked by Gosling Brothers, the makers of Black Seal rum. It’s a potent mix of ginger beer and dark rum, listed as a New Era Drink by the International Bar Tenders Association.
Goslings have been in the rum business since 1806 and their flagship Black Seal product is known around the world. Champagne bottles were hoarded from the British Navy officers’ mess and, once filled with rum, were sealed with a black wax. A true Dark ‘n Stormy should be mixed with this 80 proof Goslings rum.
The manufacturer also makes Stormy Ginger Beer to accompany the iconic rum in their famous cocktail. That might be a little harder to find, but you can substitute with any other quality brand of ginger beer. Stay away from ginger ale, however, because it’s not at all the same thing. As with making a Moscow Mule, if the recipe calls for ginger beer, don’t substitute.
If you’re looking for a nice drink with rum and ginger ale, try using a spiced rum and give it a quick stir with a cinnamon stick. That cocktail goes by the very fancy name of Spiced Rum and Ginger Ale.
