There are cocktails that are extraordinarily original, and then there are cocktails that are variations on more popular drinks, that may not ever get the recognition or the acclaim of the original. The mixology world is honest about the Colorado Bulldog being a variation of the world-famous White Russian, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be enjoyed.

Essentially, the drink is a White Russian that incorporates a little soda, for those who enjoy a little soda in their cocktail. If we are being honest, it is not extremely popular, and its origin is even extremely confusing – specifically, no one really has any idea why it is associated with Colorado, or bulldogs. Regardless, if you are a fan of tasty cocktails or simply want a White Russian with a twist – a Colorado Bulldog is a natural choice.

  • 1 ounce vodka
  • 1 ounce coffee liqueur
  • 2 ounces of cream (or milk)
  • 1 to 2 ounces of soda (preference)
  • Ice

  1. Pour the vodka and coffee liquor into an old-fashioned with ice.
  2. Add the cream (or milk), and then add as much soda as necessary.

  • Old-fashioned glass

If you are pouring on a lot of soda, you should know that the fizz might get messy – so keep a rag or towel around, or concoct the cocktail in a larger glass, so that you can transfer it into the old-fashioned when the fizz settles. It should also be noted that since this is a drink with many flavors besides alcohol, don’t be afraid to try a lesser-known vodka that may be cheaper, or a vodka with a theme that may be interesting or add to the cocktail differently!

Your experimentation could also lead to a new recipe that you can brag about and share with friends and family. The cocktail is not a particularly strong drink, and obviously has a dessert theme, so don’t worry about drinking too many. It’s overall simply a light soda variation of the White Russian, and is great for people who simultaneously have a sweet tooth and enjoy soda in their cocktails. The mixology world may not know just exactly how the Colorado Bulldog came about, besides bartenders and mixologists tinkering around – but hey, that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying one!
