Through the ingenuity of mixologists and bartenders, there are countless variations on the classic martini today.  However, some are more famous and popular than others. Enter one of the most beloved martinis ever: the coconut martini.

As with many other cocktails, there is an easy-to-prepare version and a more intense version, for the more adept cocktail drinker.  Specifically, many people find that the most satisfying coconut martinis only happen when you actually make the coconut rum yourself, rather than purchasing a version created by a spirits company.  Of course, this all depends on how much time and energy you have, or are willing to expend, when it comes to create your own martinis. Regardless, this martini is perfect for anything from a tropical cruise to an after-work treat.

  • 1.5 ounces of vanilla vodka
  • 1 ounce of coconut rum
  • ½ ounce cream of coconut
  • Splash of pineapple juice

  1. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  2. Shake.
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Cocktail glass
  • Infusion jar or bottle (if making your own coconut rum)

A popular garnish is a pineapple wedge, but coconut flakes are the obvious choice if you wish to maintain the coconut theme.  It should be noted that finding the right vanilla vodka is an integral part of the cocktail. The cream of coconut will certainly produce a thicker cocktail, however, if this is not your preference – feel free to use coconut milk instead, if you are looking to drink or serve multiple cocktails over a longer period of time.

If you wish to create your own coconut rum, here is the gist of it: remove the white meat from a coconut, chop it up, add the rum of your choice, and store in an infusion jar or bottle for two weeks. Shake regularly. During this period, you can add rum to make sure that the coconut rum is the perfect strength that you like.  Since this process takes weeks, this obviously should be reserved for special occasions, and also should be reserved for people who truly care about their coconut rum.

Otherwise, coconut rum can be purchased almost anywhere. However, all great things often take time, and many may notice that extra authenticity in your cocktail.  This might be the perfect way to throw a housewarming or barbecue that the entire neighborhood has been looking forward to. Coconut martinis are everywhere, from dive bars to upscale restaurants, so if you haven’t, try one today and experience the most popular tropical-themed martini out there!
