People love belonging to a community, and that’s why clubs are so popular. There are gentleman’s clubs, nightclubs, book clubs, and club sandwiches. One of the lesser-known “clubs” in popular culture is the club cocktail, which once was popular but has waned over the decades. The cocktail is a brandy-based cocktail, that unlike other brandy-based cocktail, has a more universal and fun feel because of the tropical hints involved.

It was first printed in 1939, as per Just Cocktails, a famous mixology book. The cocktail has ultimately paled in comparison compared to classic cocktails like the sidecar and margarita, that ended up only gaining popularity rather than losing any. This could possibly be attributed to the fact that vodka and gin have managed to maintain relevance in a much greater way than brandy. However, you will still find the cocktail occasionally ordered, especially by those that love brandy.

  • 2 ounces of brandy
  • ½ ounce of maraschino liqueur
  • ½ ounce of pineapple juice
  • 2 dashes of bitters

  1. The ingredients should be poured over ice into a cocktail shaker.
  2. Shake the cocktail shaker well.
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

It is important to note that while overall brandy has not attained the status of other spirits, it still maintains strong sales, especially in more upscale circles where mixologists are still excited about new brandies to incorporate into the latest cocktail. For whatever reason, in popular culture, the idea of a whiskey or bourbon after a long day has been more normalized than a drink of brandy.

It should also be noted that the classic club cocktail is not the same as the similarly named “Pegu Club” and “Clover Club” cocktails, as neither of these cocktails are brandy-based. Common garnishes for the classic club cocktail are lemon peels and strawberries, if you prefer a garnish with your drink. If you feel like standing out from the crowd, a brandy-based cocktail might be the move the next time you catch up with an old friend, or feel like something new after a tough workday. Join the club, and try a classic club cocktail!
