There are cocktails with hints of cocoa and chocolate, and then there is the chocolate margarita, which can only be described in one word: decadent.  It is the queen of the sweet cocktails, and might even be too much for those with sweet teeth. Of course, there are more flavors than just chocolate involved, but it should be noted that this is just as much dessert as it is drink.

It certainly is not the type of drink to keep slamming back to back, as it is an extremely heavy but delicious concoction. It should be noted that the drink can be served blended, but it may lose some flavor as a result. Just like any other margarita, it can be served either blended or strained.  This recipe will explain how to make the blended version of the famous dessert margarita.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 ounces of tequila
  • 1 ounce Godiva liqueur
  • ¾ ounce of cream (or half and half)
  • 1 tablespoon of Hershey’s syrup
  • 2 ounces of orange juice
  • 1 dash of chocolate bitters
  • Chocolate shavings (preferred amount)

Preparation:

  1. Pour the liquors, juices and bitters into a blender with 1 cup of ice.
  2. Blend until smooth.
  3. Pour into prepared glass (or pitcher).

The chocolate margarita is the perfect romantic gesture for a significant other with a sweet tooth, and as a result, is a logical option for Valentine’s Day, a birthday, or an anniversary.  Many people rim the glasses with sugar and cocoa powder, or even Oreo crumbs if they are feeling inventive. This, of course, depends on just how much of a sweet tooth you or your guests may have.

 The chocolate shavings on top provide all the “garnish” one might need, as the only fruit involved is orange juice, which blends in with the chocolate flavor perfectly without overpowering it. Pop your glass or pitcher in the freezer if you want your margarita a little extra frosty, which is perfect for particularly hot weather, or if you simply love the idea of frosty chocolate.  The chocolate margarita is a perfect way to end a meal or simply satisfy a sweet tooth, whether you are out at an upscale restaurant or simply want to make a few at home.
