The Campari and Soda is as straightforward as the name suggests. It is one of the most widely-known modern aperitifs, meaning that it is a drink that is supposed to whet the appetite before a meal. It is associated with Italy thanks to the Campari company, but is consumed worldwide to this day.
Campari actually began selling an actual Campari Soda as an alcoholic beverage in 1932, giving the company the distinction of creating the first pre-mixed drink in history. Of course, this resulted because of the immense popularity of the cocktail.
- 2 ounces of Campari
- 6 to 8 ounces of soda water
- Simply pour the Campari into a highball glass filled with ice.
- After this, top off the Campari with soda – and that’s all!
- Highball glass
As one can see, one of the reasons why it is such a popular aperitif is because it doesn’t require extensive preparation, and doesn’t even need a cocktail shaker. Some people prefer to use ginger ale instead of soda, because of their preference. The amount of soda is also a matter of preference, depending on how strong you want the drink to be. Overall, it is a very mild drink, which makes it the perfect introduction to a great meal. It should be noted that the drink overall may be an acquired taste, as it is an extremely bold mix of flavors, even if it is not strong in alcohol content.
If you’re a fan of garnishes, an orange slice is the most common garnish used in a the drink. If you’ve never tried a Campari and Soda, it may be a tad too bitter for you, but after you have a couple, you might find yourself more intrigued than you imagined. In a more random fact about the cocktail, there was actually a 1977 song called “Campari Soda”, by a band named Taxi. Although it was initially unsuccessful, a 2006 advertisement actually led it to be an extremely popular song that spent 35 weeks on the Swiss Singles Chart, because of a Swiss International Airlines commercial. The Campari and Soda may be bitter at first, but you may find yourself warming up to it over time, perhaps because it is so easy to make. Try one today!
