We’ll start off by getting you completely confused. There are actually two very different drinks that are both called a Blue Hawaiian and the Blue Hawaiian Cocktail Recipe.
The first is a refreshingly tangy drink made with a sweet and sour mix, served either on the rocks or blended with ice. That’s what we’ll be looking at here.
The second is a frozen cocktail that’s made in a blender and includes cream of coconut for a much thicker, creamier drink. The rest of the two Blue Hawaiian drink ingredients are similar, but the end results taste very different.
The Blue Hawaii is named after Elvis Presley’s first of three films shot in the Islands. It wasn’t one of his best and he was so pale when they started shooting that he had to use a sunlamp to look like a semi-authentic native. Elvis didn’t invent the drink, but he may have sampled a few as the female actresses were told to stay away from his parties because they were showing up in the morning too tired to work.
Other cocktails inspired by Elvis include the Hound Dog, Jailhouse on the Rocks, All Shook Up, Blue Suede Shooter and the Big Fat Elvis.
Be sure to let us know at liquor online if you’ve invented your own tribute to the King of Rock ‘n Roll. And whether you’ve seen him recently. Also good to know.
