The Blood and Sand cocktail is a classic Scotch cocktail. A sweet yet citrussy flavour with the deep cherry base and sweet vermouth. The deep blood like colour will be perfect to serve at a spooky Halloween party, and although ordinarily garnished with fresh orange more novelty garnishing could be used to ‘spook it up’ for your party guests!
The Blood and Sand cocktail is known to be named for the movie of the same name. The original movie starring Rudolph Valentino opened in 1922. A silent movie based on the 1909 novel ‘Sangre y arena’ by Spanish author Vicente Blasco Ibanez. It is the story of Juan Gallardo, a young boy of poor upbringing who becomes one of Spain’s greatest matadors. The movie was remade a number of times after the original. In 1941 starring Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell and in 1989 starring Chris Rydell and Sharon Stone. Then in 1998 a very early version from 1916 was restored for air.
The recipe calls for cherry brandy but a great substitute if needed is Cherry Heering, a popular cherry-flavoured liqueur. It is naturally flavoured with Danish cherries soaked in a unique spice blend and grain spirits. This natural flavour gives it its edge over many other cherry liqueurs on the market which are often made from artificial flavouring.
