For those who are beer lovers, or who have been drinking cocktails for a period of time and feel like taking a break with a lovely mixture of beer – a black and blue serves the purpose. The term and drink likely originated in the UK, which has been more fascinated with blending beers than any other country, and has specifically been blending beers for centuries.

The perfect drink for a pre-game at the apartment or a nightcap after a night out if you and your friends or family aren’t ready for another liquor drink, but could go for some beer-on-beer delight. The drink is only possible because of the lower relative density of the Guinness, which allows it to be literally layered over the other beer. The drink certainly has a pleasing aesthetic to it, and is a great way to drink one beer drink, but taste several different flavors.

  • 6 ounces Blue Moon
  • 6 ounces Guinness Stout

  1. Pour the Blue Moon into a pint glass.
  2. Use a bar spoon to carefully layer the Guinness on top, so that it floats over the Blue Moon. The slower the pour, the more aesthetically pleasing the drink will be.

  • Pint glass
  • Bar spoon

For those who don’t know, the term “black and blue” often refers to physical violence, as in, “that boxer beat that opponent black and blue”. In fact, one of the world’s most famous bands of all times, the Rolling Stones, even named an album of theirs after the phrase. Regardless, whether you’re a beer lover, or simply decide to get a hearty helping of different-flavored beers, the Black and Blue might do the job for you. Drink responsibly!
