11 Games to Make your St Patricks Day Event Memorable

St Paddy’s Day these days, is not just about celebrating and commemorating the achievements, the life and the feast of St Patrick.

What was initially, about one of Ireland’s favourite patron saints, is more and more, about celebrating Irish ancestry as individuals and inclusivity of Irish heritage in our globalised multi-cultural society.

With religious restrictions lifted on that day, focus turns to social celebrations, many of which, include drinking and how best to do that, than with loved ones, some good friends and their friends?

Green is historically the colour of the day, so we don our beanie’s, hats, scarves, bags, glasses and wigs, and it’s not just the accessories, we’ll wear shirts, pants, dresses and jackets, in fact anything in the colour of green is a goer on St Paddy’s day.

And we don’t stop there, we will drink green and eat green and look for more green to go with our green.

Guests get to eat their coins once finished. You may choose to award small prizes for players who get Bingo. The more creative you are, the more fun the group will have.

2. St Patrick’s Day Treasure Hunt

Supplies you will need for colour version

  • Card stock
  • Access to a printer that prints in colour
  • Laminating film and a laminating machine (preferable)

  • A Gold or silver (foil will do) pot with some small prizes

There are 10 clues that will lead participants to a pot of gold (could be gold chocolate coins). Some clues may require actions, such as hopping, walking backwards or running.

You should delegate the Questions and answer sheet to someone who loves to be in the lime light, has a loud voice and can command attention, if participants get to rowdy. Trivia questions require a little knowledge of Irish history relating to St Patrick patron saint, himself.

You can give out yummy Chocolate liqueur as prizes, for those who manage to get the most answers correct (without cheating). You may even like to require that smart phones are not allowed to be used, (constitutes cheating).

5. St Patrick’s Day Edible/shot Matching Game

  • Foil wrapped chocolate liqueurs

Colour in two round stickers for each colour and stick to the bottom of the liqueurs.

You can add a twist to this, when the player selects two matching colours under the liqueurs, they drink a shot.

This is a beautiful setting, and the shades of green really do make it easier and less stressful matching other greens with them. You can get really carried away with this theme, and it will only look better. If you are a natural host, you will enjoy this project.

8. Shot Potato

You need:

  • One potato
  • Shot glasses (enough for each player)
  • Some Irish music
  • Alcohol for shots

How to play

Participants will sit or stand close enough that they can pass the potato around the circle while music is played. Someone is designated to stop the music (preferably while not watching). The person caught with the potato in their hand has to drink a shot. If you prefer, you can delete the potato and simply pass around the shot and the person caught with it when the music stops, will drink the shot.

Tip.

Have a bunch of shots poured ready for play.

9. St Paddy’s Day Irish Poker

You need

  • A full deck of cards
  • Full glasses of alcohol ready to drink

How to play

A dealer is chosen to start, they will deal 4 cards (face down) to each player. The player on the dealers left will start first, they need to guess whether they are about to turn over a black or a white card. If they guess right all other players must have a drink and keep drinking for the number of seconds that card number dictates. If they guessed wrong, they must have a drink for the number of seconds. The game is over when the players are finished with their cards, not their drinks. Drinks will be topped up if need be. When all the cards are gone the game is over.

10.Irish Jig Dance Off

You need some people with a willingness to poke fun at themselves and those who know how to have a good time. You don’t even need to know how to dance of have natural rhythm.

You need

  • Green Paper
  • Markers
  • Scissors

How to Play

Clear enough floor space, so the slightly less coordinated Jiggers aren’t bumping into the competitive players.

Use your green paper, to cut some 3 leaf shamrocks. These can be used by those watching from the side lines to give the Irish jig Dancers points.

Turn up the volume on your traditional Irish folk music and start that jig, jiggers can bust out any moves that feel right or at least get onlookers laughing. They can jump, dive, bounce twist and shout. You can add a bit of interest and have dancers holding a cup at the same time (best for outdoors or floors that can be mopped).

People who choose to stand out and the early finishers can keep an eye on those Jiggers who have more stamina

When that last few are left still standing. You can decide what you would like to award winners for. It could be the most outrageous, the worst, the best, the best dressed, the belle and beast of the ball, anything you like really.

You can award small gifts such as a shamrock necklace as prizes for the winners.

11. The Belfast and the Furious

As the afternoon or evening progresses and you have a bit of alcohol under that green belt, you can either delegate two competitors or line up competitors in pairs, who will race each other around the block.

You can add more fun, by making it a relay race. And you get to choose what they need to carry and pass on.

Competitors can add some interest by running in high heels (yes, even the men), or they can play out their favourite Belfast and the Furious scene, whether they are Tokyo drifting, making racing, gear changes and sharp corner sounds and slamming on the brakes sounds.

The winner (by popular choice) gets a small prize or a shot

6 Cocktails to make St Patrick’s Day, well, not so memorable *winks*

Celebrating St. Patrick's Day comes with many traditions, one of which, is making the most of having a reprieve to down your favourite drop.

Ireland sure knows home to make a nice drop. Indeed, many Irish favourites are global favourites, such as Guiness and Baileys Irish cream, or Bulmers Cider, or Jameson Irish Whisky, Oh stop me already!

Get into the spirit this St Patricks Day, with these tasty cocktails you’ll feel the luck of the Irish.

Lucky Leprechaun Rum Punch

Serves 8 Preparation time: 35 minutes

A sparkling pineapple-lime rum punch with a Lucky Charms rim.

Ingredients

  • 1 Bunch fresh mint, remove stems and set some aside for garnish
  • 2 pkg Lemon-lime flavour unsweetened drink mix or lime jelly crystals
  • 2 qt. (8 cups) Pineapple juice, chilled
  • 1 Bottle (2 L) carbonated lemon-lime soda, chilled
  • 1 Bottle (750 ml) white rum, optional
  • 2 Lemons, sliced
  • 3 Limes, sliced
  • 8 Bite sized crunchy marshmallows
  • 2 Tablespoons of honey

Preparation

  1. Make the punch: Muddle mint with Kool-Aid in punch bowl or pitcher.
  2. Add pineapple juice; stir until mix is dissolved.
  3. Stir in soda, rum and fruit just before serving.
  4. Decorative glass rims: place crunchy marshmallows in a zip lock bag and crush into small pieces. Pour out onto a plate and set aside. Pour honey on to a plate. Dip glasses in honey then in crushed marshmallows.

To Serve

Pour punch carefully into rimmed glasses, add a few extra slices of citrus and a sprig of mint for each.

Shamrock Sour Cocktail

Serves 2 Preparation time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons lime juice
  • 1/2 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 Cup simple syrup
  • 2 Ounces Irish whiskey
  • 1 Tiny drop of green food colouring
  • 1 Lime cut into wedges for garnish

Preparation

  1. Combine ingredients and shake well; strain over ice.
  2. Garnish with a lime wedge and a shamrock stirrer.

Tips

To avoid your drink becoming too green, you can dab an extra wooden skewer into the green food colouring and then stir that into your drink to better control the amount of color.

ST. Patrick’s Day Grasshopper Ice Cream Cocktail

Serves 8 Preparation time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 5 Quart Plastic Bucket of Vanilla Ice Cream
  • 3 Shots of Creme de Menthe liquor
  • 1 Shot of Creme de Cacao liquor
  • 1 Shot of Irish whiskey (We prefer Jameson brand)

Preparation

  1. Place all ingredients in a large bowl. Knead together by using two large ice cream paddles or spoons or use your stand mixer and knead using your bread hook attachment. Once well blended you can either serve or place back in the freezer to re-freeze. If desired, top with whipped cream. Adjust liquor to taste. For a darker green and stronger mint flavour, add more Creme de Menthe.

Tip

Can be served with whipped cream on top and a sprig of mint.

Boozy Shamrock Shake

Serves 4 Preparation time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups vanilla ice cream (or coconut milk ice cream)
  • 1/3 cup whole milk (full-fat coconut milk in a can)
  • 4 Tablespoons 101 proof peppermint schnapps
  • Green jelly mix food colouring
  • Whipped cream (or coconut whipped cream) to serve
  • Decorative sprinkles (green hundreds and thousands) to serve

Preparation

  1. Allow ice cream to soften on the counter for 20 to 30 minutes.
  2. Place ice cream, milk, schnapps, and green colouring in a blender.
  3. Blend until smooth and creamy.
  4. Pour into 2 large glasses or divide between 4 smaller glasses. Top with whipped cream and decorative sprinkles.
  5. Serve with a straw.

Tip

Apply cream top layer just prior to serving

Dizzy Leprechaun

Serves 4 Preparation time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 oz Lemon Lime Sparkling
  • 2 cups Ice
  • 1 oz Tequila
  • Splash of Triple Sec (a variety of orange Curacao liqueur)
  • Fresh Squeezed Lime allow some lime to wet rims of glasses
  • Rock Salt

Preparation

  1. Combine ingredients and shake well. Dip glass rims into squeezed lime, then dip into rock salt. Add ice to glasses. Pour mixed ingredients onto ice just prior to serving. Garnish with a slice of lime.

Jameson Jelly Shots

Serves 8 Preparation Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

Green Layer

  • 1/2 Cup fresh mint leaves, packed
  • 1/2 Cup sugar
  • 1 Additional teaspoon sugar
  • 1 ½ Cups water
  • 1/2 Cup fresh lime juice
  • 2 Envelopes of unflavoured gelatine
  • 1 Cup Jameson Irish whiskey
  • 20 Drops of green dye

Clear Layer

  • 1/2 Cup fresh mint leaves, packed
  • 1/2 Cup sugar
  • 1 Additional teaspoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 Cups water
  • 1/2 Cup fresh lime juice
  • 2 Envelopes unflavoured gelatine
  • 1 Cup Jameson Irish whiskey
  • Fresh additional mint leaves for garnish

Preparation

  1. Place fresh mint leaves in a small dish. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of sugar. Using a muddle stick or a wooden spoon, press down on the leaves and twist. Repeat the action several times until the mint leaves release oil and smell minty. Set aside.
  2. Pour water and lime juice into a medium sauce pan. Sprinkle gelatine powder over the water; whisk to combine and let stand 5 minutes.
  3. Add 1/2 cup of sugar and the muddled mint leaves to the pan. Whisk to combine. Cook mixture over medium-high heat for 5 minutes, whisking gently until mixture is hot and the sugar and gelatine are dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 15 minutes.
  4. Strain the liquid to remove the mint leaves. Return liquid to the pan and add the whiskey. Add green dye.
  5. Spray silicone moulds with cooking spray to allow easy release after gelatine is set. Wipe the excess spray from the moulds. Carefully pour liquid into the moulds.
  6. Repeat for clear (or other color) layer if you’re doing a clear and a green.
  7. Pour clear layer over the green layer after green layer has set, about 20 min.
  8. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, until fully set.
  9. Remove from moulds and place on tray or small appetizer plates. Garnish with mint leaves, or edible gold stars!

Now what is a St Patrick’s Day celebration without decoration?

You will want to start early for your host to be ready, don’t start with a rush, just slow and steady. Let’s make a list from Seventeen to one and order our goodies, then our preparations are done.

From your head to your toes we’ll see you in green, your ST Paddy’s Day, is the event to be seen. Let’s make a start so that on the date, your work will be done and your event will be great!

How to plan and host an event/party running sheet, template, instructions

Preparation:

Set the Budget: for your event $$$$$$

Break the Budget into categories: Then you can break your budget down, into categories that match with our headings below, such as food, alcohol, decorations and games. Then you will be able to determine whether you can afford to buy paper plates and plastic cups, or whether you need to use your own and wash up afterwards. Establish how you want your event to run. Leave a small amount un-allocated as a contingency.

Decide on a Theme: so that all of your invitations, decorations, food appearance and the music you compose, are complementary.

Venue: Are you having your event at home, in a park or at a venue? Make sure you book early if it is at a venue. If it is a park, it would be worth someone going to the location early to stamp your intention to use that space.

Lists: There are a few lists you will need to write, there is a lot to remember and it’s much less stressful in if you put a bit of attention on the planning phase, and stick to your plan, the whole thing should run smoothly. The lists you will need to compile are:

Event Budget: and how that Budget breaks down into categories.

Guest List

Type of Event: outlining your theme and intended entertainment, e.g. music and games.

The Food, Alcohol and other Beverages List: What would you like to serve guests? Be sure to include whether the foods can be prepared, or ordered early and what needs to be fresh on the day or the day before.

Food Supplies List: Compile a list, deconstruct each of the foods and beverages so you can shop for supplies.

Party Supplies List: Deconstruct your games and consider other costs of the event such as a DJ or photographer.

An Event List: That way when you are delegating roles to people to make the event run smoothly, the people who are visual will be able to see the bigger picture, and you will have it as a reference on the day.

Delegation: If you are delegating people to host specific tasks, it may be helpful for them if you can put a short instruction sheet that you can go through with them shortly before your event.

Delegation: Do you want to delegate roles for other people to host different tasks, such as a bar, food preparation, decorations, greeting guests, photography and music or games? (good idea)

Guest Requests: Are you going to ask your guests to bring anything (such as food or byo liquor and/or chairs) with them?

Theme Participation: Let your guests know if you would like them to dress in Green for St Patrick’s Day, you may even let them know there will be a prize for the best dressed, so they are more likely to make an extra effort.

I have compiled a list below for you to follow and to prompt your imagination to add your own ideas, strike out what doesn’t fit your agenda and highlight your priorities.

2 Weeks before:

Guest list: decide who you would like to invite, to a degree your budget will determine how many you can invite, unless you consider people each bringing a platter or their own drinks.

Invitations: make sure everyone to be invited has received theirs.

Are you going to need extra chairs and tables? If so, will you need to hire them, or will you get away with borrowing some?

Music: is a must, for creating a fun atmosphere, decide how you want to cater for music, do you have a speaker dock for your smart phone, or are you planning on having compact discs with your stereo. If you are using your smart phone, do you want to down load anything specific? You may like to set out a play list for the day. If you are using your stereo, are there any compact discs you could buy? Or are you wanting to have live music, with one performer, a duo or a band. You need to book live music straight away. For future events, it is best to book your venue and entertainment as early as possible.

Activities: Decide how you would like the event to progress, do you want to involve guests in games? If so, decide which games you would like to incorporate.

Food and Beverages: Make your list of the food and beverages, keeping in mind what you have established as your budget.

Supplies: Make a list of the supplies and prizes you will need, for your games to run smoothly, your decorations to look incredible and catering is memorable.

Entertainment: If you are planning on having live music or a DJ or a photographer, you should book them as soon as possible.

Budget: Once you know how much you can afford to spend on your event, make your list of the headings below and break your budget into the following categories.

  • Invitations
  • Tables and chairs
  • Serving vessels
  • Cups and glasses
  • Dress Code- What will you be wearing? Do you already have it, or do you need to buy items to complete your look?
  • Games and Entertainment
  • Decorations and Décor
  • Food
  • Liquor Online

1 Week Before

Guest List: Check your RSVP’s and follow up those invitees you haven’t heard back from yet, so you have a better idea of how many people you are catering for.

Print and assemble party printables: for decorations, serving and for DIY games.

Check your lists: Is there anything you need to confirm, buy, prepare or follow up? Look at the supplied you have so far, check if you have missed anything, or if there is anything you would like to add.

Music: How is your music going? Is it all sorted, is there anything you need to address, so you can be confident that this is taken care of.

Activities: Now that you have purchased your deconstructed supplies, you can put your game components together, organise any printables, cutting, compiling, and checking whether the location where you want to play the games, is going to be adequate. If you have delegated hosting the games to someone, once you have put the components of games together, this is a good chance to discuss the games with your games host.

Decorations: Check that all of your printables are complete, you have your balloons, plates, cups and cutlery together.

2 Days Before:

Purchase fresh supplies: like milk, fruits and vegetables, meat, cakes etc.

Food: All of your food items should sorted, apart from those that are to be purchased fresh on the day, such as bread, shamrocks and flowers.

Decorations: If you are hosting your event at home, you can go ahead and start moving things around. You can move chairs and tables in to place, Put up an undercover area outside, drop pets off to be babysat, start putting streamers, ceiling and wall decorations etc.

Food: Now you can turn your attention to your food preparation, such as home-made sausage rolls, can be made and cooked, so that they can just be reheated on the day, or you can make them and put them in the fridge on a baking tray, ready to go in the oven, to cook on the day. You can make Potato salad and coleslaw, cookies, cakes, slices, deserts etc.

Courtesy: Try to track down a few of your closest neighbours, for a quick chat about your upcoming event. They are less likely to call the police if the noise runs a little late, simply because you offered them consideration and the courtesy of being informed.

Drinks: If you have fridge space, it would be good to put bottles of drinks in the fridge, or on ice early to ensure they are cold on the day.

Venue: If you are entertaining at home, now is a good time to look around and consider what could be tidied up, put out of reach or put away. Do you need to mop or vacuum? How does the street appeal look? Is there anything out the front or at the front door or the door itself that could do with a clean? If you have arranged to host the event at a park or outside, have you considered a feasible alternative if the weather lets you down?

Make a list of all the foods you would like to serve. Then decide what you will be buying and what you will be making.

Then decide what can be made in advance and what will need to be made fresh on the day or night before.

Then you should make a list of all of the ingredients you will need for each dish. While shopping, be sure to stick to your list and your budget, otherwise your costs can blow out very quickly.

Cake, are you planning on having one? Also will you be making it yourself, or do you need to order one?

The day before your event:

RSVP’s: It would be good to ring everyone, or shoot them a text to make sure they remember where they need to go and if you need them to bring anything.

Shopping: Today is a good day to buy your cold items.

Shopping: You can also pick up your fresh items

Rest: Get to be early if you can, tomorrow is a big day, you don’t want to be falling to sleep as the night progresses, you want to be the life of the party! Always good to have 2 or three people who are the life of the party, between them they can keep everyone interested and in good spirits.

Helium: If you are wanting helium in your balloons, normally you can pick up the helium dispenser a couple of days prior to the event. Normally the store will want a refundable deposit, in case it gets broken or you don’t take it back for a week. Best not to fill your balloons until tomorrow/ St Paddy’s Day, as they will start to droop too early. A large number of green balloons floating on the ceiling with green yellow and orange streamers dangling down looks really effective and comes up fabulous in photos too. Beautiful gold and/or silver streamers would look really lux.

Bedding?: Do you need any extra bedding, for anyone who may be travelling some distance to celebrate with you, or may not be in a state to drive or catch transport home? There is generally 1 in every crowd. We want to make sure no-one is left in a vulnerable situation.

Better Safe than Sorry: If your event is at home, is there anything that you need to put away so that people don’t touch it and it doesn’t get broken.

Pets: Are there any pet’s that need to be relocated for the day/night?

Flowers: If you have ordered flowers, it is worth picking them up today, as you want to minimise how much running around needs to be done on the day.

On the day:

Decorations: If wind or weather are not a concern, you can set up tables and chairs, streamers and balloons etc.

Street Appeal: Make sure there is something out the front of the location that will let people know the exact location, is helpful.

Welcome!: As people arrive, make sure you are there to welcome them, mingle by all means, but keep an eye out for new people arriving. If you will be busy, ensure you delegate someone to greet people as they arrive.

Photo Evidence: While you are greeting your guests on arrival, it is the perfect time to ask them to forward any photos they take to you so you don’t miss any of the action, you will probably wind up with some outstanding photography.

The Wrap: After your event is all finished up, you will have a lot of cleaning and tidying to do. You may wonder why you went to so much trouble cleaning your home beforehand.

Please be mindful of others and be responsible when taking your rubbish elsewhere to deposit.

Photo Collage: After the event and clean up, you may like to turn your attention to your photos and compile a collage and you can post it on FaceBook and tag your guests into the post.

Thanks for Coming: Guests will be really pleased to see extra photos of themselves that they may not have access to otherwise. Best practice would be to ensure that the photos you post online are not going to embarrass individuals, you don’t know if their colleagues may see them, or a potential employer may come across them while considering their potential to fit the organisations values and culture. People will really appreciate this and it is a good opportunity to thank people for attending.

Thanks for helping: If you delegated roles to some of your guests, it would be appreciated, if you reach out afterwards and thank them for their contribution to an awesome event. While you are posting photos, this is a great opportunity to thank those who assisted in making your event a success.
